Sephardim Interned in Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp
Index Prepared by Mathilde Tagger
The camp of Bergen Belsen, situated in lower Saxony in Germany, was set up in 1940 for prisoners of war (POW). In 1942 it became a concentration camp in which life conditions grew worse day by day as it was placed under the command of the SS. At first, Jews with foreign nationality such as British, American, etc. were kept there to be exchanged with German POW but life of the internees became extremely hard. Although extermination was not systematic- there was no gas chamber nor crematorium- some 60,000 persons perished there from mistreatment, typhus epidemic, malnutrition, and other causes.
A book about the Bergen Belsen Concentration lists all the Jews who were interned in that camp. The present index, based on that book, includes 1237 Jews who were born in one of the countries where Sephardim used to live: Algeria, Austria (Vienna), Bulgaria, Erets Israel, France, Germany (Hamburg), Great Britain (London), Greece, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Netherlands (Amsterdam), Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, former Yugoslavia, and even Yemen. In addition to these, 59 typically Sephardic names have been added for whom places of origin were not mentioned.
