Gibraltar Census (Jewish population)

Index prepared by
Kevin Martin

The British captured Gibraltar from Spain in July 1704 after which most of the Spanish population fled. The first detailed census was taken in 1777 at which time Gibraltar had 3,201 inhabitants. The 1791 census showed the population had decreased to 2,890 inhabitants of which over 725 were Jews. Some of the census records were blank so the records of 680 Jewish inhabitants from the 1791 census are retrieved here.

The early population "registers" (census) of Gibraltar are available online at Gibraltar National Archives website which also contains civil and military records. Another useful website is Professor Sawchuk's website which contains the downloadable "Gibraltar Explorer" app.

This searchable database of Jewish inhabitants of Gibraltar in the 1791 census is provided by Kevin Martin.

This database contains the following data points:

Search hints:
(See FAQ button for additional tips):
1. Check alternative spellings
2. Check partial spellings
3. ***Searching using the "contains" field and with part of a name has the best chance of finding the most positive results.
Example: searching for Malka or Malca will find nothing. But searching for "contains" "mal" or "malc" will find the the 5 Jewish "Malco" (probable transcription error) inhabitants.
