Introduction

    The British captured Gibraltar from Spain in July 1704 after which most of the Spanish population fled. The first detailed census was taken in 1777 at which time Gibraltar had 3,201 inhabitants. The 1791 census showed the population had decreased to 2,890 inhabitants of which over 725 were Jews. Some of the census records were blank so the records of 680 Jewish inhabitants from the 1791 census are retrieved here.
