Memorial Plaques in Synagogues of Bulgaria

Mathilde Tagger

Introduction
by Mathilde Tagger

The Central Synagogue of Sofia was completely renovated in 2009. From that time on, people who had close relatives with roots in Sofia began to hang memorial plaques on a special wall of the synagogue.

On a private trip to Bulgaria, Daniel Horowitz, chief genealogist of My Heritage, visited the synagogue and took photos of the plaques as he knew they are of genealogical ivalue. The plaques placed on the walls of Plovdiv and Pazardjik synagogues were also photographed.

155 names were indexed with photos of the plaques.
